The Master’s Degree in Environmental Communication seeks to promote environmental literacy and to respond to the current need to address the environmental agenda with solid communication tools that enable the analysis and understanding of different phenomena and problems related to our planet.

The enrolment fee includes a complete trip each year with a different theme and destination based on four main “scenarios”: jungles, deserts, polar territories and large cities. The students will be accompanied by a team of teachers and will carry out the tasks of an environmental communication project in the field, along with workshops and seminars.

A team of expert and highly experienced lecturers made up of journalists, documentary filmmakers, ethnographers, anthropologists, historians, reporters, writers, photographers, doctors, biologists, microbiologists, industrial engineers, food technicians, environmentalists, veterinarians, chemists, among others, will teach and advise you throughout the course.

The Master’s in Travel Journalism (online mode of study) was created to strengthen and complement the offer of the Master’s in its face-to-face mode.

The Master’s Degree in Travel Journalism offers theoretical and practical contents that provide communication professionals and other interested people with the necessary techniques and knowledge to “narrate” a trip. 

The Master’s Degree deals with the production of travel journalism content for the press, radio, television and the Internet. 

In the same way, it responds to the current need to offer travel itineraries that go beyond conventional tourism, providing added value to them.

It is also aimed at professionals who wish to undertake their own initiatives (specialised travel agencies, audiovisual, radio or press projects, multimedia content, online platforms, etc.) in the field of travel communication.

The Master’s Degree presents a specialised approach from the point of view of journalistic production and provides a multidisciplinary perspective from different areas of the social sciences of interest and use in the training and development of a journalist or travel communicator.

The Master (in its classroom version) includes the development of a real trip around the European and/or African continent that will allow each student to apply the knowledge acquired and produce a real travel journalism product.

Doctoral students can acquire knowledge in their research through stays abroad, which can be carried out, where appropriate, within the framework of bilateral co-supervision agreements with a foreign university (thesis under international co-supervision) and in the International Doctoral Degree. Staying abroad is also possible under the Erasmus agreements.

The students will have the opportunity to get to know the surroundings of Barcelona and interact with students from the Catalan university, while strengthening their skills in the field of multimedia content production.

The UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs programme, the Global Alliance for Media and Information Literacy Partnerships (UNESCO MIL Alliance) and the UAB Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación are organising this academic exchange with the aim of fostering intercultural dialogue between Egyptian and Barcelona students and promoting spaces for the development of critical thinking, creativity and cooperation.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y de Educación is a consolidated group specialised in scientific research and dissemination, which belongs to the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Recognised by AGAUR(Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca) of the Generalitat de Catalunya as a Consolidated Research Group on the basis of its trajectory, projection and development, it develops projects and research in the field of convergence between communication and education. Since its creation, it has developed initiatives aimed at integrating, with awareness and freedom, communication technologies in the so-called global or knowledge society. Under the direction of Santiago Tejedor, the Gabinete organises different Master’s Degrees, such as the Master’s Degree in Travel Journalism (on-site and online), the Master’s Degree in Communication and Education, the Master’s Degree in Environmental Communication and the Master’s Degree in Political and Electoral Communication Management. The group has a wide and varied collection of publications, in the form of scientific articles, books and book chapters, and other works, which is constantly being renewed. It also has a laboratory for teaching innovation projects, transfer and new formats that are conceived and developed from a perspective based on creativity and multidisciplinary work.

The Gabinete organises every year an academic expedition that travels around the world with students from different universities and careers. This is the Tahina-Can Expedition, which has been awarded as the best educational project in Spain. It also has the portal Tu Aventura, the educational platform InfoEDU and the newsgames and science project Reporter@s de la Ciencia.

There will be three main activities: debates and conferences organised by the Doctoral Commission; the Journal Club space coordinated with the journal Anàlisi, and the Doctoral Working Groups through which students can share their research progress with other students and professors. Under the title, “Human Rights in Times of Conflict. Contributions from research in journalism and communication”, the reflections, contributions and questions that emerge from the different programmed spaces will be shared and nourished with the participation of experts and academics, students and professors from the university community.  

The participation of doctoral students in spaces in which they can share their research advances and learn about the debates and procedures of current research practice in Communication is a central element in high-level academic training.

To this end, the Doctoral Summer School will promote intellectual exchange between students and lecturers, both from the UAB’s specific communication programme and from programmes in other countries and institutions. The holding of research meetings with people interested in similar topics, and the confrontation of research projects with different realities (geographical, academic, theoretical), allows the academic growth of the project as well as the professional projection of the student.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación and the Arab Academy for Science Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) have organised this space for academic exchange, characterised by learning through practical workshops, which seeks to promote intercultural dialogue. The inaugural event, which took place on 15 July, was chaired by Cristina Pulido (Serra Húnter lecturer in the Department of Journalism and researcher at the Gabinete), Samy Tayie (lecturer at the University of Cairo), and Sally Tayie (PhD, UAB and collaborator at the Gabinete). The students listened to lectures by Jordi Gili, telecommunications expert and international speaker, on ‘Leadership in the hyper-connected world’, and Carolina Escudero, PhD in Social Psychology, on ‘Communication and emotions’.

During their stay in Barcelona, Egyptian students will strengthen their communication and audiovisual skills through theoretical classes and practical workshops related to writing for the media and audiovisual and mobile communication. As part of this programme, students will be required to develop and present their own audiovisual projects. They are also complementing their studies with cultural visits to the city and other activities.

The agreement between the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Arab Academy for Science Technology and Transportation of Egypt aims to foster intercultural dialogue and synergies between the two institutions.

The participants, from Europe, Latin America and Asia, gave life to the various training activities of the Doctoral Summer School, which this year celebrated its ninth edition. During the event’s three days, participants reflected on topics such as digitalisation in journalism, media literacy and political communication.

On the first day, the inaugural conference was given by Claudio Celis Bueno from the Scuola Universitaria Superiore Sant’Anna Pisa (Italy). The researcher explained how content moderation is important for the protection of users in the online environment. In this line, he also spoke about the automation of common sense and the caution with which technology should be used for this purpose.

He was followed by Luis Miguel Pedrero from the Universidad de Nebrija (Spain), who addressed the subject of radio’s evolution and adaptation to the digital ecosystem. In this regard, the specialist highlighted the current boom in podcasting and pointed it out as a tool to reconnect radio with younger audiences. This conference was organised by the research group Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación.

This first day closed with the first Working Doctoral Group. Professor Carmina Crusafon from the UAB moderated the interventions of doctoral students Jordi Badia Perea, Juan Pablo Cannata Ramos, Javier Durán Ramírez and Carlos Peña Orozco. Each presented the progress of their doctoral research and received comments from their peers.

On 6 July, the second day of the Doctoral Summer School, the Journal Club was organised by the journal Anàlisi. In this space, the research projects ‘Venezuelan mass migration in Colombia: a study of news framing in reference cybermedia’, by Gabriel Lotero-Echeverri, Luis M. Romero-Rodríguez and M. Amor Pérez-Rodríguez, and ‘Cultural slow journalism in Spanish: Case studies from Spain, Mexico and Colombia’ by Carmen Peñafiel, Beatriz Zabalondo and Alazne Aiestaran were presented. In this way, the event participants had the opportunity to learn from the authors of the publications about the research process they carried out. They were also able to ask them questions that enriched the academic debate.

This was followed by two conferences. The first was ‘GMMP Who is in the news: Beijing +25 Balance – Global Media Monitoring Project’, given by Professor Mª Teresa Vera Balanza from the Universidad de Málaga (Spain) and organised by the research group Laboratorio de Periodismo y Comunicación para la Ciudadanía Plural (Laboratory of Journalism and Communication for Plural Citizenship). And the second was ‘Anti-feminist propaganda on the web as a political strategy: the case of Vox’, given by Professor Asunción Bernárdez of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) and organised by the Observatory of Spanish fiction and new technologies (OFENT).

The second Working Doctoral Group was also held. The doctoral students Pedro Nicolás Aldana Afanador, Mariana Alencar Dornelles, Alicia Tamayo Rodríguez and Gabriel Torres Espinoza participated in this occasion. The interventions were moderated by Professor Santiago Giraldo Luque of the UAB.

The third day opened with the conference ‘Narrative Anatomy of Fake News in times of pandemic in Brazil’, given by Professor Fabiana Piccinin from the Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (UFSC) (Brazil) and organised by the Laboratory for Prospective and Research in Communication (LAPREC) of the UAB. The specialist presented how disinformation about the coronavirus has grown in the South American country, and how politicians have promoted it.

On the last day, the third and fourth Working Doctoral Groups were held in parallel. One in Spanish and the other in English. The doctoral students participating in the first group were Eman Elsayed Elshamy, Jingya Hao, Engy Hassan Shaker, Ahmed Nazih Toubal and Wei Wang, and the moderator was Professor Laura Cervi from the UAB. The second group consisted of Alexandre Lavado Campas, Tomás Cajueiro, Olga Casado Rodríguez, César Eduardo Gordillo and Nelly Guamán Guadalima, and was moderated by Santiago Giraldo Luque.

Finally, the closing lecture was given in English by Luz Mar González-Arias from the Universidad de Oviedo (Spain). She presented ‘Communicating COVID-19: Media, Literary and Artistic Responses to Lockdown’. This presentation closed the series of reflections generated around the main theme of the Doctoral Summer School 2021, and opened lines of debate on, for example, the responsibility of the media in the media literacy of the population.
