Specifically, the research aims to build a theoretical framework on AI applied to local journalism, create a directory of national and international experts, create a map of cases of good practices and successful experiences, produce a collection of interviews with specialists in the field, prepare a diagnostic report, and publish a white paper with recommendations, guidelines and proposals for the inclusion of artificial intelligence in local journalism.

The research is led by Santiago Tejedor, director of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación. He is accompanied by Cristina Pulido, Diana Sanjinés, Laura Cervi, Sally Tayie and Judith Martínez.

The course will be held on Wednesday, 26 June, and 10, 11 and 12 July at Calatayud Town Hall. In these sessions, participants will be trained in advanced techniques for news verification using artificial intelligence, a key competence to face the growing challenge of fake news and disinformation.

The VerificaRTVE team, together with experts from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), the Carlos III Universidad de Madrid (UC3M) and the Universidad de Granada (UGR), will be in charge of the workshops. Participants will be able to learn about voice and image authenticity verification and chatbot detection using tools developed specifically for the IVERES project.

In addition to acquiring practical skills, attendees will have the opportunity to make valuable connections with other professionals and experts in digital journalism, thus strengthening their professional networks and contributing to the enrichment of journalism with innovative technologies.

Students will be entitled to a Certificate of Attendance that will accredit their participation in the course provided that they have attended at least 85% of the classroom hours.

The book includes the reflections of 31 experts who, from different disciplines and approaches, reflect on AI and its contributions and challenges in a technological context of changing transformations and where local and regional journalism demands clear guidelines and references to be able to articulate a solvent strategy in their spheres of influence. To this end, Tejedor has analysed documents and, in addition to working with experts, has talked to journalists and managers of different media in Girona. The result is a hitherto non-existent work that establishes lines of work while identifying possibilities and threats in the journalistic field.

“We are at a juncture marked by dichotomous views on AI. The best way forward, however, would be to identify it as a complement or reinforcement to the daily work of journalism professionals. To this end, it will be crucial for academia to establish bridges of dialogue and collaboration with the industry, on the one hand, and for pedagogy to be committed to enabling citizens to understand this technological development with all its positive aspects and all the elements that introduce dangers, threats and uncertainties. It is essential to have a critical debate based on rigour and ethics,” Tejedor points out.

On the other hand, Tejedor brings together a series of resources that help journalists in their work of searching for, managing and producing content of different types and approaches. The research consolidates the author’s career in this field, where he has published a manual, various articles and several reports on journalism and AI.

The event, which was held at the headquarters of the Royal Academy of Engineering in Madrid, recognized the achievements of the field of computer engineering and its contribution to general society through awards to outstanding people, institutions and projects within the field. In this sense, the IVERES project stood out as a technical computer engineering project to combat fake news. This initiative uses various Artificial Intelligence techniques to monitor social networks such as TikTok, YouTube, X and Telegram, in addition to verifying audio content and image.

At the activity, the president of the CCII, Fernando Suárez, expressed that the winners “show the upward trajectory, the weight that computer engineering has gained in our society and the future perspectives. A modern society cannot be conceived without technological advances in all areas. We are in the best hands, so the future is promising and encouraging. I would like to make a call to talent, as it is applicable in all areas. The future of society lies in education and young people. We will see the third edition with very high-quality awards”.

In a time where digitalization and computer engineering are crucial for the progress of Spain, the CCII recognized and highlighted the contribution of the winners, who contribute considerably to socioeconomic development.

The article focuses on the IVERES project “Identification, Verification and Response”, promoted by Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), in collaboration with the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad de Granada and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya.  IVERES focuses on creating a verification platform for image, video and social network monitoring to combat disinformation. Within the framework of this project, the paper delves into two focus groups that the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación conducted with senior and junior journalists to learn about their experiences with the use of Artificial Intelligence tools.

Among the main conclusions, the results of both focus groups showed that journalists consider disinformation to be an emerging problem that must be addressed as a priority and that, more than ever, it reinforces journalistic work.

In this sense, the professionals agree that AI can serve as an ally to help in the verification process, however, they emphasise that work must be done to create systems capable of providing a greater degree of certainty and that are easy and accessible for the benefit of journalists and citizens in general.

The study provides a glimpse of the possibilities that AI presents for journalism professionals and the challenges that must be faced in order to make use of these technologies in an ethical and reliable manner. Both meetings, together with the development of the IVERES project, constitute valuable material for furthering the fight against disinformation.
