The work has been prepared by the research team of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), in collaboration with the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, the University of Vienna and the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam. It presents an analytical study of the main regulations and policies on media literacy and the fight against disinformation in the European Union. The document is divided into five main sections: the first deals with the general normative framework on disinformation and media literacy in the world and in the European Union, and the following four sections analyse policy strategies in each of the countries participating in the study.

The text concludes with the need to develop further strategies that media literacy involves all sectors of society beyond educational and media interest groups and the importance of defining evaluation protocols for such strategies in order to collect data on their impact and future replication.

The document is now available free of charge on the official Omedialiteracy website. This is an initiative funded by the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF) and led by the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación of the UAB, together with the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, the University of Vienna and the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, whose main objective is to analyse state of the art in media literacy and the fight against disinformation in the countries of the respective agents involved: Spain, Portugal, Austria and the Netherlands.

The project’s final results will also be presented in an international webinar on 14 February 2024. The event will be attended by Dr. Samy Tayie, President of the Arab Chapter of UNESCO’s MIL Alliance, who will presenting the paper “Media Literacy for the Global Understanding”.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y de Educación is a consolidated group specialised in scientific research and dissemination, which belongs to the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Recognised by AGAUR(Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca) of the Generalitat de Catalunya as a Consolidated Research Group on the basis of its trajectory, projection and development, it develops projects and research in the field of convergence between communication and education. The group has a wide and varied collection of publications, in the form of scientific articles, books and book chapters, and other works, which is constantly being renewed. It also has a laboratory for teaching innovation projects, transfer and new formats that are conceived and developed from a perspective based on creativity and multidisciplinary work.

The Gabinete organises every year an academic expedition that travels around the world with students from different universities and careers. This is the Tahina-Can Expedition, which has been awarded as the best educational project in Spain. It also has the portal Tu Aventura, the educational platform InfoEDU and the newsgames and science project Reporter@s de la Ciencia.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación and the Arab Academy for Science Technology & Maritime Transport (AASTMT) have organised this space for academic exchange, characterised by learning through practical workshops, which seeks to promote intercultural dialogue. The inaugural event, which took place on 15 July, was chaired by Cristina Pulido (Serra Húnter lecturer in the Department of Journalism and researcher at the Gabinete), Samy Tayie (lecturer at the University of Cairo), and Sally Tayie (PhD, UAB and collaborator at the Gabinete). The students listened to lectures by Jordi Gili, telecommunications expert and international speaker, on ‘Leadership in the hyper-connected world’, and Carolina Escudero, PhD in Social Psychology, on ‘Communication and emotions’.

During their stay in Barcelona, Egyptian students will strengthen their communication and audiovisual skills through theoretical classes and practical workshops related to writing for the media and audiovisual and mobile communication. As part of this programme, students will be required to develop and present their own audiovisual projects. They are also complementing their studies with cultural visits to the city and other activities.

The agreement between the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Arab Academy for Science Technology and Transportation of Egypt aims to foster intercultural dialogue and synergies between the two institutions.
