New users, new television. In a communication environment in which digital technology is taking root and penetrating all areas, television is obliged to reinvent itself.

Capturing new audiences, offering creative content based on user intervention or convergence with other media and exploring new formats are some of the possibilities facing ‘TV’. This is a possible horizon, in a context in which young people are migrating to the Internet to consume news, but also in which the audiovisual is configured as one of the star languages of the panorama.

OI2, the Observatory for News Innovation in the Digital Society aims to:

give visibility to the latest trends in the field of news and television

show how these initiatives are developed in a sustainable way, with business models in line with today’s economy.

Case studies, trend reports, meetings and interviews with experts as well as the presentation of good practices are some of the activities that will be developed within the framework of this research platform, promoted by Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) and carried out by two higher education institutions: the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Universidad CEU San Pablo.

Reporter@s de la Ciencia: The Adventure of Knowledge is a project of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación of the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB), which aims to encourage critical thinking and scientific vocation in students of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO), through a video game based on escape rooms. It has the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology-Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (FECYT).

Reporter@s de la Ciencia aims to educate, raise knowledge and awareness of science among secondary school students. To do so, it uses pedagogical strategies adapted to the profile of this audience (12 to 16 years old) and to their media usage habits, especially digital platforms such as social networks.

Specifically, the project configures and presents students with a gamified experience based on a series of challenges inspired by the universal history of science from a gender perspective. The young people will have to learn and apply the scientific method, adopting the position of a reporter who investigates, documents, contrasts and elaborates information. This participation can take place independently or in a virtual tournament together with other schools in Spain.

The project is committed to the gender perspective in its different actions. In addition, the initiative stands out for its environmental commitment and uses current global challenges, various international anniversaries and celebrations in the field of science, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a cross-cutting thread.

Santiago Tejedor, director of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación, is the leader of this initiative. The FECYT supports and finances this proposal as part of the actions for the promotion of scientific, technological and innovation culture 2020, undertaken by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Government of Spain.

Likewise, Reporter@s de la ciencia has the collaboration of Radio Televisión Española (RTVE), in terms of audiovisual content and dissemination. It also has the support of the Master’s in Environmental Communication and the Master’s in Communication and Education, both from the UAB.

The INFO/EDU project: Collaborative ecosystem of informative audiovisual resources for education, is a research project that is part of the State Plan for Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2017-2020 within the Challenge “Social changes and innovations”.

The research aims to develop, test and validate a technological platform capable of adapting to educational uses and effectively distributing content among the different actors in the system. It will also seek to enhance personalisation and cooperation in production by the user community.

Info/Edu emphasises innovation in secondary schools, and will focus on the use of current audiovisual news content produced by television stations.

More than 300 videos of high thematic and visual quality, free access and easy navigation is the formula that characterises the Info/Edu platform. The portal offers students a current and plural learning experience, allowing them to explore the best content from the most experienced television channels in Ibero-America, such as Corporación de Radio y Televisión Española (RTVE.es) and the Asociación de Televisiones Educativas y Culturales Iberoamericanas (ATEI).

Each student can find on the platform the content that best suits their educational level (primary, secondary, high school and university), their age (children, teenagers, adults), and the subject they are studying (Natural and Social Sciences, History of Art and Spanish Language and Literature). In addition, you can filter the contents depending on the subject (from Big Data, DNA, ecology, surrealist art, Charles Darwin, Coronavirus, etc) and the purpose of the content (for a project, class or for study).

The objective of the Quality Journalism Chair is to contribute to the promotion of journalism literacy, empowerment, and better information, thus fostering quality journalism. It will work primarily on increasing and improving Media and Information Literacy (MIL), one of UNESCO‘s priorities in the Communication and Information Sector.

Given the increasing multiplicity and variability of information sources fed by different phenomena such as big data (data-driven journalism), complex mobile communication devices (mobile and participatory journalism and blogging), information consumption (increased browsing and information creation and consumption due to mobile). The need for better fixed and Wi-Fi connections), together with associated factors such as increased misinformation, misinformation and mistrust in media and journalism, increased critical thinking and citizens’ knowledge about citizens are continuously set as priorities for achieving a more active and better engaged citizenry in the public and private sphere. And, in turn, achieving greater trust in trustworthy media and supporting the appreciation of quality journalism. These come as essential dimensions of media and information literacy that require deeper attention.

Specific objectives:

Promote MIL in a changing communication and information landscape for quality journalism (share MIL’s impact on best practices in quality journalism, ethics, media trust, engaged audiences, etc.).

Advance MIL’s role in preparing critical citizens who can identify trustworthy media.

Reflect on current trends shaping journalism today to identify lines of action and research problems, specifically the potential role of MIL in this area, to be addressed by the Chair.

Establish strategies to cooperate with libraries and strengthen existing agreements with information providers and disseminators.

Activities

Current journalism and communication practices are subject to fluctuating and complex production and consumption scenarios. New players are entering the media and information landscape. Mobile technologies, data flows, programming skills, etc. are changing the way we create and consume information. As powerful as this scenario is, it also brings risks and challenges. For this reason, the Chair aims to serve as capacity building and knowledge transfer in the fields of interest.

MIL research and policy engagement lead to an impact on good practices in journalism and foster critical and participatory capacities in citizens (empowerment) through wiser consumption/use and production of information and content, and thus investigate the actual media and information landscape (new trends, uses, challenges, threats/risks, ethics, etc.).

1. Postgraduate teaching programme: Master in Education and Communication; Master in Travel Journalism; online Master in Communication and Education (Spanish); online Master in Communication and Education (English); online Master in Travel Journalism; online Master in Political Communication; MIL MOOC (Spanish and English versions).

The Chair will contribute to developing new knowledge on practices, trainings and trends that could help draft and propose scenarios for the implementation of techniques, programmes, curricula, guidelines, etc. to improve the competence of citizens in the media and the quality of journalism.

In terms of capacity building, the Chair is conceived as a platform from which the issues shaping current journalism practices will be studied to get a more complete picture of the potential increased role of the MIL. Examples of significant current trends are big data; data-driven journalism; blended research journalism and mobile and participatory journalism etc. With new media players posing new challenges, this Chair aims to address the different concerns that these challenges pose to media and social media scenarios, as well as equipping stakeholders.

“The Spanish UNESCO Chair on MIL for Trustworthy Media and Quality Journalism” seeks to study the different phenomena currently surrounding MIL in order to improve trust in the media and support quality journalism.

The objective of this Chair is to reinforce the results achieved by UAB as a result of its active participations within the UNESCO-UNAOC International University Network on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue. Consequently, research will continue and will focus on the study and generation of MIL assessment schemes, MIL competency mapping tools, as well as the development of projects related to the relationship between ethics, empowerment, gender equality, participation and journalism.Through this Chair, the UAB seeks to strengthen current alliances with information providers, such as RTVE (Radiotelevisión Española), Planeta (publishing group), UNESCO, UOC publications, etc., to highlight good practices around the world with the aim of reaching more countries.

The IVERES project “Identification, Verification and Response” was awarded in the “Public Project” category of the second edition of the National Computer Engineering Awards, held by the General Council of Professional Colleges of Computer Engineering of Spain (CCII).

The event, which was held at the headquarters of the Royal Academy of Engineering in Madrid, recognized the achievements of the field of computer engineering and its contribution to general society through awards to outstanding people, institutions and projects within the field. In this sense, the IVERES project stood out as a technical computer engineering project to combat fake news. This initiative uses various Artificial Intelligence techniques to monitor social networks such as TikTok, YouTube, X and Telegram, in addition to verifying audio content and image.

At the activity, the president of the CCII, Fernando Suárez, expressed that the winners “show the upward trajectory, the weight that computer engineering has gained in our society and the future perspectives. A modern society cannot be conceived without technological advances in all areas. We are in the best hands, so the future is promising and encouraging. I would like to make a call to talent, as it is applicable in all areas. The future of society lies in education and young people. We will see the third edition with very high-quality awards”.

In a time where digitalization and computer engineering are crucial for the progress of Spain, the CCII recognized and highlighted the contribution of the winners, who contribute considerably to socioeconomic development.

Santiago Tejedor, director of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), considers that the recognition “is an impulse to continue promoting applied research that, from interdisciplinary perspectives, and a pragmatic will, serves to solve problems and needs of our society”.

The UAB co-directs the IVERES project together with Radio y Televisión Española (RTVE) and they have an alliance with the public universities Carlos III de Madrid, Politécnica de Cataluña y de Granada. It is anticipated that the project will significantly impact the fight against disinformation, not only in Spain, but even internationally. In addition to its contribution to mitigating this phenomenon, it is expected to generate greater awareness among citizens regarding the risks and effects of fake news in society.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación is a consolidated group specialised in scientific research and dissemination that belongs to the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the UAB.
The article focuses on the IVERES project “Identification, Verification and Response”, promoted by Radio Televisión Española (RTVE) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), in collaboration with the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Universidad de Granada and Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. IVERES focuses on creating a verification platform for image, video and social network monitoring to combat disinformation. Within the framework of this project, the paper delves into two focus groups that the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación conducted with senior and junior journalists to learn about their experiences with the use of Artificial Intelligence tools.

Among the main conclusions, the results of both focus groups showed that journalists consider disinformation to be an emerging problem that must be addressed as a priority and that, more than ever, it reinforces journalistic work.

In this sense, the professionals agree that AI can serve as an ally to help in the verification process, however, they emphasise that work must be done to create systems capable of providing a greater degree of certainty and that are easy and accessible for the benefit of journalists and citizens in general.

The study provides a glimpse of the possibilities that AI presents for journalism professionals and the challenges that must be faced in order to make use of these technologies in an ethical and reliable manner. Both meetings, together with the development of the IVERES project, constitute valuable material for furthering the fight against disinformation.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y de Educación is a consolidated group specialised in scientific research and dissemination, which belongs to the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the UAB.
