CrAL will target young people aged 14-19 to reinterpret and lead the production of audiovisual content. Secondary school teachers and trainers working in non-formal settings will be taught how to educate their students in reading, writing and creative audiovisual production to improve their media literacy and critical thinking skills. Parents and community members will also be involved in the project as active protagonists, in order to maximise the impact of CrAL at local, national and European level.

At UAB, the research is led by Santiago Tejedor, director of the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación. This creative audiovisual laboratory is based on the methodology of creative audiovisual reading and writing, which has already been tested in secondary schools in Italy by the Central Institute of Sound and Audiovisual Assets (ICBSA) of the Italian Ministry of Culture.

The project will benefit from this experience, adapt it and extend it to four other countries: Spain, Greece, Croatia and Lithuania. 

CrAL is a project funded by Erasmus+ EACEA/34/2019: Social inclusion and common values. It will last for three years and, in addition to the UAB, it has the participation of ALL DIGITAL, (Belgium), EGInA (Italy), Istituto Centrale per I Beni Sonori e Audiovisivi (Italy), Hellenic Open University (Greece), Centre of Technical Culture Rijeka (Croatia) and Association Langas į ateitį (Lithuania).

The agreement, entitled “Network of Universities on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue” (UAC-MILID), during the First Forum on “Media and Information Literacy” held in Fez (Morocco) in June 2011, was signed by UNESCO, the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and six other universities: University of the West Indies (Jamaica); Cairo University (Egypt); University of Sao Paulo (Brazil); Temple University (United States); Beijing University (China); The University of Queensland (Australia) and Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (Morocco).

Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, supported by Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, is responsible for setting the annual calendar of activities, organising a yearly meeting and coordinating a publication including articles on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue.

UNESCO and UNAOC have created the UNESCO-UNAOC  UNITWIN Global Chair on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (“UNESCO-UNAOC MILID UNITWIN”).

UNESCO-UNAOC MILID UNITWIN specific objectives include:

• Act as a Observatory for critically analyzing: the role of Media and Information Literacy (“MIL”) as a catalyst for civic participation, democracy and development; for the promotion of free, independent and pluralistic media; as well as MIL’s contribution to the prevention and resolution of conflicts and intercultural tensions and polarizations.
• Enhance intercultural and cooperative research on MIL and the exchanges between universities and mass media, encouraging MIL’s initiatives towards respecting human rights and dignity and cultural diversity.
• Develop within the participant universities educational and media production practices that contribute to dissolving prejudice and intercultural barriers and favour global dialogue and cooperation among citizens as well as social and political institutions around the world. In addition to the international dimension, these practices will be reflected at the local level in the 8 cities or neighbourhoods in which the partner universities are located.
• Promote global actions relating to MIL (including adaptation of the UNESCO MIL Curriculum for Teacher Education and other relevant tools, publications, congresses, seminars, teaching resources, and faculty and students’ exchanges) that could contribute towards stimulating dialogue and understanding among people of and within different cultures and societies.
• Create a virtual centre to research on, and study and develop MIL initiatives aimed at the creation of projects and publications linking universities and research centres.
• Promote and support other global media initiatives that could reinforce civic participation through open, free and independent media and information systems that favour intercultural dialogue and cooperation.
• Encourage and support citizen participation as well as educational and cultural institutions whose initiatives promote media and information literacy, cooperation and intercultural dialogue.

The work has been developed by the research team of the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, based on a systematic review of European literature, policies and initiatives in the field of media literacy and the fight against disinformation in the European Union and, more specifically, in Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands and Austria. The documents aim to break down the findings of these first three reports and make them more accessible to the general public and to the main target groups defined in the project’s communication plan: educators, journalists and policy makers.

The infographics are now available free of charge on the official Omedialiteracy website. The project, which ended on 29 February 2024, is now in the final phase of justification and is awaiting renewal for a second part, which will focus on communicating and disseminating the results obtained during the first phase of the research.

Omedialiteracy is an initiative funded by the European Media and Information Fund (EMIF) and led by the Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), together with the Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, the University of Vienna and the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam, whose main objective has been to analyse state of the art in media literacy and the fight against disinformation in the countries of the respective agents involved: Spain, Portugal, Austria and the Netherlands.

The Gabinete de Comunicación y de Educación is a consolidated group specialised in scientific research and dissemination, which belongs to the Department of Journalism and Communication Sciences of the UAB. Recognised by AGAUR (Agència de Gestió d’Ajuts Universitaris i de Recerca) of the Generalitat de Catalunya as a Consolidated Research Group on the basis of its trajectory, projection and development, it develops projects and research in the field of convergence between communication and education. Since its creation, it has developed initiatives aimed at integrating, with awareness and freedom, communication technologies in the so-called global or knowledge society.

Under the direction of Santiago Tejedor, the Gabinete organises several of its own Master’s Degrees, such as the Master’s Degree in Travel Journalism (on-site and online), the Master’s Degree in Communication and Education, the Master’s Degree in Environmental Communication and the Master’s Degree in Political and Electoral Communication Management. The group has a wide and varied collection of publications, in the form of scientific articles, books and book chapters, and other works, which is constantly being renewed. It also has a laboratory for teaching innovation projects, transfer and new formats that are conceived and developed from a perspective based on creativity and multidisciplinary work. Every year, the Gabinete organises an academic expedition that travels around the world with students from different universities and careers. This is the Tahina-Can Expedition, which has been awarded as the best educational project in Spain. It also has the portal Tu Aventura, the educational platform InfoEDU and the newsgames and science project Reporter@s de la Ciencia.
