The Gabinete de Comunicación y Educación of the Universitat Autonòma de Barcelona has developed the journalistic research project “Pandemials: Adolescence in times of coronavirus”. It is a descriptive, explanatory and exploratory work on how adolescents in Barcelona have lived through the period of forced confinement imposed by the coronavirus: their longings, fears, expectations, frustrations, bonds of friendship, family life and the inevitable management of loneliness.

Based on 10 life stories of adolescents of different ages, neighbourhoods and profiles living in the Catalan capital or its periphery, the work combines research (with interviews with experts, focus groups and surveys) with journalistic work based on life stories. The result of the project has been an interactive multimedia book, enriched with QR codes, which reflects on loneliness in adolescence in times of coronavirus.

This research was the winner of the Montserrat Roig Prize for journalism and social communication in Barcelona 2020 in the category “Promotion of journalistic research in the field of social welfare in Barcelona”. This award is a Barcelona City Council initiative that has been running for 28 years. Its purpose is to highlight good journalism in Barcelona and to celebrate the legacy of the journalist Montserrat Roig (1946-1991).
